There are a few communities built around Lake Atitlan. One of which is San Pedro La Laguna, at the foot of Volcan San Pedro. Shortly after checking in, we realized one night wouldn’t be enough.
San Pedro is a crazy mix of hippies and locals, women selling woven bracelets alongside women selling massages and crystal reflexology services. It’s easy to see why the flower children would setup shop. The lake is just as beautiful from San Pedro as it was from across the water in Panajachel. The only difference is that San Pedro has charm. Sidewalks wind catawampus through the town, creating a network of restaurants, bars, and places for spiritual healing.
A lot of what we did in San Pedro was enjoy the roof deck of where we stayed. The deck offered a panoramic view of the lake and was perfect for sunbathing and lake gazing.
Where We Stayed: Hotel Villa del Lago. Awesome roof deck, internet, family-owned, can get traditional breakfast if you ask, clean, very reasonable ($4/night/person)
Where We Ate: The Clover. Has good food, but there’s plenty of options. Shanti Shanti. Good food with lake view, reasonably priced. The Alegre Pub. Good food and drinks, sports bar, read story about Scottish owner meeting his Guatemalan wife in San Pedro because she worked at the currency exchange counter
What We Did: Lake gazing, cheap massages, wandering of winding streets and sidewalks
